Thrennel

Help

Short answers to the questions people ask most. Thrennel is in an invite-only beta, so some of this will change.

How do I get an invite?

Thrennel is an invite-only beta, so it isn't open to everyone yet. Request an invite and you'll get a sign-up link by email when a spot opens. There's no fixed waiting time; it depends on how many spots there are.

Is it free?

Yes. Thrennel is free during the beta.

What is the difference between my journal and my saved knowledge?

Your journal is what you think. Your knowledge is what you saved from elsewhere, like articles and videos. They are kept apart on purpose, so your own thinking never gets buried under other people's. You can filter to either one or see both, and in the web, thoughts are dots and saved items are diamonds.

How do I write a note, and does it sort itself?

Today opens with a greeting and one writing box. Just write. Topics are suggested automatically, and you can change a note's topic any time. While you type a thought, Thrennel also shows things you saved earlier that relate to it.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Thrennel works on a phone as an installable web app, with voice dictation through your browser's own speech recognition. There is a light and a dark mode.

Can I photograph a page or a whiteboard?

Yes. Upload a photo of a page, a whiteboard, a slide or a screenshot on the Import page and Thrennel reads the text in it into notes. It keeps the text, not the picture.

How do I save a YouTube video or an X post as notes?

  1. Go to the Import page.
  2. Paste the link.
  3. Choose "Make notes".
  4. Review the notes. You can edit them, delete any, add your own, and pick a topic.
  5. Save.

For a video, Thrennel listens to the speech and writes a summary and key points as separate notes. For an X post with a video, it also uses the post's own text. An X Article or a plain X post is read as text. Nothing is saved until you approve it, and most videos are ready within a minute.

What can't it save from a video?

It listens rather than watches, so it uses the speech (and the X post's text), not the picture. A video with no talking won't give much. It works with public YouTube videos and public X posts, up to 2 hours of video. Private, sign-in-only and live-stream videos can't be fetched. An X link needs to be a single post. Other video sites aren't supported yet.

Yes. Paste a link to an article, or paste text straight in, and Thrennel writes notes from it: a summary and key points. You review them first and can edit, delete or add before anything is saved, because your web should only hold what you chose.

How do I import my old notes (Day One, Markdown)?

You can import Markdown or text files, and Day One exports. Dated entries land on their original days. Other formats aren't supported yet.

What does Ask do?

Ask lets you put a question to your whole journal, like "what have I said about my side project?". You get an answer that points to the notes it came from, so you can go back and read them.

Search finds meaning as well as words. Searching "focus" also turns up a note about deep work.

Can Thrennel summarize my days, weeks or topics?

Yes. You get day, week and month summaries. Action items from a summary become checkboxes, and unfinished ones carry over to the next day. In your web you can also pick a note and read it together with what connects to it, or read a whole topic together: what your own thoughts and the things you saved there have to say to each other.

What happens to streaks if I miss a day?

Streaks are quiet. A streak doesn't break just because it's morning and you haven't written yet. Earned badges are never taken away, and you can switch the progress layer off in Settings.

Is my journal private? Who can read it?

Your journal is encrypted on the server with a key only your password or recovery code can unlock. Stored files and backups can't be read without one of them, not even by the person who runs Thrennel. While you're signed in, the server unlocks your entries to show them to you and to run search and AI, so it isn't end-to-end encryption. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and your data is never sold. The privacy policy has the full picture.

Does the AI send my notes somewhere else?

AI features run first on the operator's own computers with open-source models. Only when those are offline does the text for that task go to Anthropic's Claude API. For a pasted video, the sound is downloaded and transcribed on those same computers, and the download is deleted as soon as the transcript is made. X posts are read through FxEmbed, an open-source service that shows public posts; only the post's link is sent to it.

Can I export everything and leave?

Yes. From Settings you can export everything at any time as an Obsidian vault (one Markdown file per day and per saved source, with the links between notes kept), as a single Markdown file, or as JSON. There is no lock-in, and you can delete your account yourself.
